The British Invasion Decade
The sixties was another great decade of great music and achievement with the United States landing on the moon in 1969, and saw three great Americans assassinated (president JFK 1963, Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy in 1968).
The 60s top 100 hits from 1960-1969, will show all of this great music when America was bombarded with Beatle mania in 1964, with the invasion of the Beatles having a series of successful hits with 20 of them becoming number 1 hit songs.

Some interesting facts:
- In order to make this list, every song had to peak at the #1 position and hold the peak position for 2 weeks or more.
- For a song to make the top 10, it had to be at #1 for 5 weeks or more.
- For the decade, there were a total of 204 songs that peaked at the #1 position.
- The Beatles have the most songs in the list with ten (10).
- The years of 1960 & 1964 tied with the most hits with 12.
- The year of 1965, did not have a hit on this chart until #35.
- The song at #45 “The Twist” by Chubby Checker, is unique because it was released in 1960 and 1962 and it topped the charts both times peaking at #1 for one week in 1960 and 2 weeks in 1962. It’s included in the rankings with the other songs with 3 weeks at number one. It is the only record to perform this feat in rock history. Counting both years, it spent a total of 39 weeks on the charts.
- The Beatles song “Yesterday” #44, is the most covered pop song of all time with over 3,000 versions recorded according to The Guinness Book of World Records. This song was written by Paul McCartney. It is the first song to be recorded without the other Beatles. McCartney is reported saying that the tune was easy, but the words took about two weeks, in 1965.
- The song “Running Bear” recorded by Johnny Preston, was on the charts for 27 weeks, the most of all the songs released in the 60’s.
- Ranking of the songs was determined by peak position, #weeks at peak position, #weeks in the top 10, #weeks in the top 40 and total weeks on chart.
- This decade saw a total of 556 instrumentals chart on Billboard, of which 9 made it to #1.
