e of the most creative and loved musical figures of the late 20th century. Blind since shortly after birth, Wonder signed with Motown’s Talma label at the age of eleven and continues to perform and record for Motown as of the early 2010s.

He has recorded more than thirty U.S. top ten hits and received twenty-two Grammy Awards, the most ever awarded to a male solo artist. Wonder is also noted for his work as an activist for political causes, including his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a holiday in the United States.

He was born Stevland Hardaway Morris on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, is the third of six children and is known by his stage name Stevie wonder. When Stevie Wonder was four, his mother left his father and moved to Detroit with her children. He began playing instruments at an early age, including piano, harmonica, drums and bass. During childhood he was active in his church choir.

Discovery and Early Career

Ronnie White of The Miracles gives credit to his brother Gerald White for persistently nagging him to come to his friend’s house in 1961 to check out Stevie Wonder. Afterward, White brought Wonder and his mother to Motown. Berry Gordy was impressed by Wonder and he signed him to a contract with Motown’s Tamla record label as Little Stevie Wonder.

His breakout hit came in 1963 when he was thirteen, with the release of his first single “Fingertips Part 2” which whet to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for three weeks, and also #1 on the R&B charts. He also made his film debut in 1964, with “Muscle Beach Party”, and dropped the “little” from his name on future recordings. Until 1972, he had some success with top ten hits on the Hot 100 chart but no number ones.

He also wrote songs for himself and also a big hit for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles titled “Tears Of A Clown“, in 1970.

Classic Period

During his classic period from 1972 through 1977, his contract with Motown expired and it was renewed with Wonder having more control and rights to his own songs. Motown also gave Wonder a higher royalty rate. It was during this period that he had five number ones and three top ten hits on the pop charts. This brought Stevie Wonder into the spotlight. Some of these songs are “Superstition”, “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin” to name three. All three were #1 for one week on the charts. Also during this period, Wonder won two consecutive Grammy Awards in 1974 for “Innervisions” and 1975 for “Fulfillingness’ First Finale”.

Commercial Period 1979-1990

It was during this period that Wonder had is best known songs to hit the charts. In 1982, a recording with Paul McCartney titled “Ebony And Ivory” which went to #1 for 7 weeks on the Hot 100 chart, and “I Just Called To Say I Love You” in 1984, which was number one for three weeks and won Wonder an Oscar in 1985. His last number one song in this period was “Part-Time Lover” in 1985, and was #1 for one week. This is also Wonder’s last solo #1 hit on the pop charts. He recorded a #1 hit with Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Gladys Night titled “That’s What Friends Are For” #1 for 4 weeks, also in 1985 his tenth and last number one.

Music Career

During Stevie Wonder’s recording career, he has sold over 100 million records world-wide. He has 10 #1 hit song’s on the pop charts and 20 #1’s on the R&B chart, and 8 #1’s on the Adult Contemporary chart. On the pop chart he has 9 #1 hits, 27 top 10 hits, 35 top 20 hits, 45 top 40 hits, and 11 top ten albums.  He is ranked by Billboard as the #30 artist from 1960-1969, #7 artist from 1970-1979, #15 artist from 1980-1989, and the #6 artist of all-time from 1955-2010. He is ranked the #31 artist of all-time on the Adult Contemporary chart and #4 artist of all-time on the R&B chart. On the R&B chart he has 19 #1’s, 46 top 10, 54 top 20, 65 top 40 hits.

Awards

He as received 22 Grammy’s which is the most ever awarded to a male solo artist. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983, inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and received an Oscar for Best Original Song “I Just Called To Say I Love You” in 1985. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
